The Zimbabwean Health Minister David Parirenyatwa has reportedly said that condoms made in China are too small for African men. During an HIV/AIDS prevention event in Harare last week, Parirenyatwa said that condoms imported from China are too small for their men. According to a local news, he said that men often complain about the products being too small.
The Health Minister was quoted as saying, "The southern African region has the highest incidence of HIV and we are promoting the use of condoms. Youths now have a particular condom that they like, but we don't manufacture them. We import condoms from China and some men complain they are too small." Parirenyatwa has now called on manufacturers to produce condoms bigger in size to "address the concerns" of the men in his country.
He urged private companies "to come on board in the fight against HIV and start manufacturing drugs" which are suitable for the Zimbabwean people. The Sun quoted him as saying, "We are promoting condoms, both male and female. If you want to be a big business (private sector), please manufacture condoms (because) we import condoms from China, and some people complain they are too small, so you need to be able to have your own condoms."
After the Health Minister addressed the concern, Zhao Chuan, the chief executive of Beijing Daxiang and His Friends Technology Co., a Chinese condom manufacturer, told the South China Morning Post that they are now planning on producing contraception in various sizes and textures.
