Mumbai, August 21: Collins Jumaisi Khalusha, a 33-year-old man from Kenya, who is a suspected serial killer and dubbed as the "Vampire", escaped the Nairobi Police's custody on August 20, along with 12 other inmates. Mohamed Amin, head of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, believes it is an insider job, as reported by NYPost. Police officials said that these inmates escaped by cutting the wire mesh of their cells and jumping past the perimeter wall of Gigiri Police Station.

Nicknamed the "Kenyan Ted Bundy" after the infamous American serial killer Ted Bundy, Khalusha has been described by prosecutors as a "psychopathic serial killer with no respect for human life". Khalusha is suspected of brutally murdering multiple women, including his wife. When police personnel went to the cells to serve breakfast, they found that Khalusha and the other inmates had escaped.

Khalusha Confessed to Killing 42 Women

Khalusha was arrested on July 15, 2024, when the police discovered 10 dismembered bodies along with several body parts in plastic bags dumped in the Kware neighbourhood in Nairobi. Marked as a "high-value suspect" facing serious allegations, Khalusha had confessed to mutilating and killing 42 women, starting first with his wife, from 2022 till his arrest. The Kenyan police had found evidence of the same from Khalusha's residence and recovered a machete, gloves and nylon bags similar to the ones used to dump the body parts in the garbage. Further, after the forensic investigations by government pathologist Dr John Oduor, it was ascertained that none of the victims had bullet wounds, although one was strangled to death. The limbs and torso recovered from the bags led to the identification of two victims, while two remained unidentified since the body parts had already decomposed beyond recognition. Detectives who found mobile phones and identity cards of these victims suggest that the murders were well-planned.

"Our preliminary investigations indicate that the escape was aided by insiders, considering that officers were deployed accordingly to guard the station,” Amin said to the media. However, Khalusha's lawyer John Maina Ndegwa maintained that his client was innocent and that he was tortured by the police and pressurised to confess to these crimes. The two other suspects arrested in the case are expected to be present in court on August 26, 2024.
