Mumbai, October 14: The United States has deployed the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system to Israel, accompanied by 100 troops. This advanced missile defense system is designed to intercept ballistic missiles at ranges of 150 to 200 kilometers (93 to 124 miles) and boasts a near-perfect success rate in tests.

THAAD's capabilities include engaging short-, medium--, and intermediate-range ballistic missiles during their terminal flight phase, enhancing Israel's defences against potential missile strikes, particularly in light of recent Iranian attacks. US To Send THAAD Missile Defence System to Israel: Iran Warns American Troops ‘At Risk’ Over Missile Defence Deployment to Tel Aviv.

According to a report by NDTV world,  US stepped in to support Israel against ballistic missile threats from Iran and its proxies. As Israel prepares to retaliate following the death of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, the deployment of the THAAD system enhances its defences. Iranian officials have warned that any Israeli attacks, especially on Tehran's nuclear facilities, would lead to a strong response. Amid rising tensions, Israel has also sought U.S. assistance for arms and ammunition, having requested support over the past year amid its ongoing conflict in Gaza, which has resulted in nearly 45,000 deaths and widespread displacement. Israeli Attack on Gaza: Over 40 Killed, Including at Least 13 Children in Airstrikes on Al Mufti School in Nuseirat Refugee Camp.

How THAAD Can Bolster Israeli Defenses Against Missile Strikes?

The THAAD radar system can be deployed alongside missile batteries or stationed on U.S. Navy ships. It detects incoming missiles in two configurations: a forward-based mode that can track targets up to 3,000 kilometres (1,865 miles) away and a terminal mode that focuses on descending targets. Given that Iran is approximately 1,700 kilometres (1,100 miles) from Israel, THAAD will significantly strengthen Israel's defence capabilities. CNN military analyst Cedric Leighton, a former U.S. Air Force colonel, stated that THAAD would act as a deterrent and provide an additional layer to Israel's air and missile defence systems. Testing has indicated that production versions of THAAD have a perfect record in intercepting incoming missiles.
