Columbia, September 24: A 25-year-old woman from South Carolina was rushed to the hospital after a high-intensity Crossfit routine went horribly wrong. While performing pull-ups, her arms suddenly swelled and "exploded," causing immense pain and shock. Later, she shared that she was completely unprepared for the incident, stating, "I didn’t know what was going on."
According to a report by the New York Post, Jessica Johnson, a Crossfit enthusiast from Charleston, had been participating in the Murph Challenge, a tough workout that includes running a mile, doing 300 squats, 200 push-ups, and 100 pull-ups, and then finishing with another mile run. Things took a turn for Jessica Johnson during the pull-up portion of the workout. She stated, "I was doing 10 sets of five pull-ups," and mentioned that she "left the gym feeling exhausted" since she hadn't trained her arms like that in a while. The following day, Johnson experienced extreme soreness and swelling in her arms, which she had never encountered before. Initially dismissing it as a normal response to her intense workout, she thought, "I haven’t done pull-ups in forever; it was a hard workout; they’ll go down." However, when she attempted to shower and brush her teeth, she realized she couldn’t fully straighten her arms. Over the next few days, the swelling worsened.
She also noticed that her urine had changed to a “weird” hue. “It was darker, almost like an orangey color,” she explained. Despite drinking plenty of water, Johnson observed that she wasn’t urinating much during the day. Following blood tests, it was determined that Jessica Johnson's significant arm swelling resulted from rhabdomyolysis, a serious condition that occurs when muscles break down and release harmful substances into the bloodstream, typically due to intense physical activity.
Doctors had to make incisions in her arms to reduce the swelling, a procedure she initially thought was extreme, but they were worried about possible kidney damage, a frequent complication that can necessitate dialysis. Thankfully, her kidneys were found to be unaffected after the incident.
However, Jessica did experience some liver damage and was discharged from the hospital four days after her admission. She reported that she had made a full recovery. However, physicians have advised her to refrain from exercising for a period and to gradually reintroduce physical activity instead of participating in intense workouts.
