Jerusalem, October 28: Israel is amping up its defence system to counter enemy attacks amid continuous tensions in the Middle East. The Israeli Defense Ministry has announced that the high-powered laser interception system, known as Iron Beam, is expected to be operational within a year. This advanced system is designed to complement existing defence mechanisms like the Iron Dome by targeting and neutralising smaller projectiles.

During the signing of a NIS 2 billion ($535 million) contract with defence manufacturers Rafael and Elbit, Defense Ministry Director General Eyal Zamir stated, “The first capability of the ground laser system is expected to enter operational service in a year from today.” The agreement aims to significantly boost production rates to ensure timely and efficient delivery of the laser systems. What is Iron Beam?

The Iron Beam is an advanced laser air defence system developed by Israel’s Rafael Advanced Defense Systems. It is designed to intercept and destroy short-range projectiles such as rockets, artillery shells, and mortar bombs, which are typically too close for the Iron Dome system to handle effectively. The system uses high-energy lasers to target and neutralize these threats, providing a cost-effective solution with each interception costing significantly less than traditional missile interceptors.

How Does Iron Beam Work?

Iron Beam works by directing a high-powered laser beam at incoming projectiles, heating them to the point of destruction. The system is effective at ranges up to approximately 10 kilometres (6.2 miles) and can operate in various weather conditions. It is designed to complement other defence systems like the Iron Dome, creating a layered defence strategy that enhances overall protection against a variety of aerial threats.
