New York, September 17: A tragic incident unfolded in California as a 40-year-old woman faced the devastating consequences of a bacterial infection contracted from consuming undercooked Tilapia fish. Following a harrowing ordeal that spanned several months, Laura Barajas had to undergo a life-saving amputation surgery on Thursday. She fell seriously ill in late July after consuming fish purchased from a San Jose local market, which she had prepared at home.
As per News 19, Barajas, who is a mother to a six-year-old boy, endured a challenging journey battling this horrifying infection. The woman personally prepared and consumed the fish, as disclosed by a friend identified as Anna Messina. Messina expressed the gravity of the situation, emphasising that Laura Barajas "nearly lost her life" due to the incident. Messina went on to say, "It's been an immense burden for all of us. It's a dreadful situation. This could have happened to anyone. She was in a critical condition and required a respirator." She was placed into a medically induced coma after Laura contracted sepsis. "Her fingers were black, her feet were black, her bottom lip was black. She had complete sepsis, and her kidneys were failing", Messina further said. Medical professionals suspect that the infection was probably caused by Vibrio vulnificus, a bacterial infection that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a recent warning about.
