Akron, September 26: A 23-year-old woman, Sydney Powell of Akron, Ohio, has been found guilty of murder, felonious assault, and tampering with evidence in the brutal killing of her mother, Brenda Powell, aged 50, according to the Summit County Prosecutor’s Office. The horrific incident occurred in March 2020 when Sydney attacked her mother with a frying pan and proceeded to stab her nearly 30 times in the neck.

According to multiple reports, Brenda Powell, a healthcare worker at Akron Children’s Hospital, eventually succumbed to her injuries. Sydney's motive, as revealed during the trial, was her fear that her expulsion from Mount Union University would be uncovered by her mother. Sydney, sobbing in the courtroom, faced the jury's verdict with tears. During the proceedings, the defence claimed that Sydney suffered from schizophrenia, arguing that she could not be held accountable for her actions due to a psychotic break. US Mass Shooting: Five Dead, Six Injured After Gunman Opens Fire at California's Cook's Corner Bar.

However, experts had differing opinions on her mental state at the time of the crime. Prosecutors argued that Sydney's actions were purposeful, noting that she switched weapons during the attack, suggesting a calculated intent to harm her mother and prevent her secret from being exposed. The jury's decision followed intense deliberations, lasting over nine hours, during which experts couldn't agree on Sydney's sanity at the time of the murder. US Plane Crash Caught on Camera: Banner Plane Crashes on Street in Hollywood, Pilot Killed (Watch Video).

Nonetheless, the defence's plea of not guilty by reason of insanity was ultimately not accepted by the jury. The sentencing for Sydney Powell is scheduled for September 28, where the court will determine whether she will serve her sentence in prison or a mental health facility. The tragic incident shocked the community, as Brenda Powell was a respected child life specialist at Akron Children’s Hospital for nearly three decades.
