A 69-year-old man died in a Brooklyn fire ignited by a lithium-ion battery from an e-scooter, marking the fourth fatality this year linked to these dangerous devices, officials reported.
New York, October 17: In a tragic accident, A 69-year-old man died after burning in a fire ignited by a lithium-ion battery, which trapped him inside his Brooklyn apartment on October 16. According to FDNY Chief Fire Marshal Daniel Flynn, the intense flames and heat from the device blocked the exit to the man’s apartment, trapping him inside.
According to a report by New York Post, fire erupted at approximately 3:40 a.m. in a second-floor apartment on Brighton 3rd Street near Brightwater Court in Brighton Beach. The blaze, which resulted in the death of an elderly man and injuries to two others, was sparked by a faulty lithium-ion battery that was charging a scooter. According to Flynn, the situation was worsened by the removal of the smoke detector from the apartment. Officials reported that the fire was extinguished by around 4:30 a.m. "They were fortunate to have been able to do that as quickly as they did, considering the heavy fire conditions, with only minor injuries," Esposito noted. The elderly victim, whose name has not yet been released, marks the fourth death in a fire caused by these dangerous devices this year, a decrease from 14 fatalities at this time in 2023, according to FDNY Commissioner Robert Tucker.
