Mumbai, August 7: A Brooklyn night nurse who was caught on camera slapping and shaking a five-week-old premature baby boy last year was sentenced to one month in prison on Monday, August 5. In addition to the prison term, Gwendolyn Blake received three years of probation and is effectively barred from working in most nursing positions.
The Westchester County District Attorney’s Office informed On August 30, 2023, Blake was supposed to care for a family’s newborn in the town of Mamaroneck. Instead, she was caught on camera slapping the baby as he cried. The violence continued again the next day when the nurse repeatedly slapped the baby's face, grabbed his head, and shook him. Blake was arrested on September 5, 2023, and pleaded guilty to two misdemeanour charges of endangering a child in May. Although prosecutors recommended a 60-day jail term, Mamaroneck Judge Ronald Meister sentenced her to 30 days in jail, according to the district attorney’s office. As part of her probation, Blake is prohibited from caring for the elderly, children, or other vulnerable people. Additionally, a permanent order of protection was issued to keep her away from the victim and his family.
The family is outraged by the incident. “This is a preemie who is colicky because of his low birth weight, and instead of being treated with love and compassion, he was abused for being in pain... This has been a nightmare for our sons, our family, and our community,” they say. “We will never be able to trust anyone with our children and are overly sceptical of anyone they interact with,” added the family members. Westchester District Attorney Mimi Rocah criticised Blake for betraying both her professional duties and moral obligations.
