According to a report in Fox35orlando, a kindergarten teacher dropping off food at a nearby homeless shelter encountered the mother, who told her, "Take her with you. Give me $20. You can have her." Shockingly, another man reported that the mother offered her daughter for sex in exchange for $5. However, he had not reported the incident until the authorities approached him. When authorities arrested the mother, they found the 10-year-old girl in a desperate state—crying, hungry, and appearing as though she hadn't bathed in days. The child was taken to the hospital for treatment as she was "severely lethargic” and temporarily placed in a safe environment while the investigation continues. The mother, whose identity is being protected, faces charges of child abuse and selling or surrendering a minor for money or property.
The case is being jointly investigated by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and the FBI, and it has also been referred to the Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF) and other relevant agencies.
