Ukraine Passes Law to Chemically Castrate Paedophiles, a Step Towards Curbing Child Sex Abuse Menace

Ukraine's parliament, the Verkhovna Rada has passed new laws to forcibly castrate paedophiles using chemical injection. The law was passed on July 11 and will come into force soon. Anti-androgen injections would be used on men convicted of serious sex offences with minors. Reportedly, a total of 247 MPs voted for the move at a parliament meeting on July 11. Chemical Castration – Here’s Everything You Should Know About Alabama’s Bill HB 379 for Child Sexual Offenders.

Chemical castration does not involve surgery, it consists of drugs which will null the sex drive of a person for a period of time. The procedure will not be done on individuals younger than 18 years of age and those older than 65. Along with forced chemical castration, the law also plans to award 15 years in prison for raping minors. And upto five years in prison for acts involving minors.

The law hopes to improve the current laws under which sexual abuse cases of children are combated in Ukraine. It will apply to all child rapes, including 'unnatural' rape and sexual abuse of children. The topic of child abuse has become one of the central issues in Ukraine's election campaign following an incident of abduction, sexual molestation and murder of a young girl in southern Ukraine. On June 19, eleven-year-old Dariya Lukyanenko was found in a cesspool six days after she left home for a dance class. Later, a 22-year-old family friend admitted to her murder.

Forced chemical castration of paedophiles is legal countries including Britain, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Israel, Kazakhstan, Norway, Sweden, and the United States. Russia introduced a law in 2012 that allows chemical castration of convicts if they consent to have it.
