Mumbai, August 27: David Devanney, a 35-year-old man in Scotland's Motherwell, Lanarkshire, struck down another man named Jamie Seery with his car after Seery allegedly had a bitter break-up with Devanny's sister Amy. Both David and Jamie had allegedly got into an argument before the former ran over him. Despite the major attack where Jamie was reportedly sent flying around 10 feet away, he miraculously suffered no serious injuries and was treated at a hospital. However, after Devanney admitted to assaulting Seery with his car, he avoided jail time for the crime when the Hamilton Sheriff Court ordered him to carry out 300 hours of unpaid community service. The Court further put Devanney under a year of supervision and monitoring, in case he attempted another assault on Seery. As per the victim's depute fiscal Carla McGuire, Jamie Seery, was in a relationship with Devanney's sister Amy Devanney before the offence took place and it was due to a tough break-up between the two that Jamie and David got into an argument. During his acceptance of the assault attempt, Devanney claimed that Seery, who was with his friends, took out a weapon from his white carrier bag. Seeing the weapon, David backed off and got into his blue Ford Focus. Then, as per a Mirror report, Devanney reversed his vehicle and drove directly towards Jamie Seer, striking him with the front of the car. The impact knocked Seery back between eight and 10 feet, after which the accused drove off. However, Gregor Jarrot, defending Devanney, was quoted in the report as saying, "He was under the impression that there may have been an intention to harm a family member and that he had to take action to protect her." After considering the matter thoroughly, the Hamilton Sheriff Court's Sheriff Liam Murphy, ordered Devanney to serve 300 hours of community service and kept him under supervision stating, "It's clear the custodial threshold has been past but the report indicates that there is an alternative and taking everything into account, I'm satisfied that an alternative to custody is available in this case."
