London, May 24: United Kingdom Prime Minister Theresa May is set to resign on June 7, amid the dissent she continues to face from a major section of the Tory lawmakers. May on Friday announced her decision to step down as legislative leader of the Conservative Party, paving way for the election of a new leader for the PM post.

Notably, the Tories lack absolute majority in the Parliament, and would therefore require to put forth a PM-designate who evokes support from smaller allies -- who have so far voted against the May-proposed Brexit law.
May's ouster was triggered by the back-to-back defeat she faced in the Parliament over her Bill which would implement Brexit -- Britain's exit from the European Union.
The terms of the exit deal are against the interests of UK, said the Opposition Labour, as well as backbenchers within the Conservative Party.

Leader of Opposition Jeremy Corbyn said replacing May with another Tory leader is not a solution to bring Britain out of the Brexit deadlock. "A fresh election should be called as the country needs a new leadership," he said.
