Typhoon Ampil in China: Over 2,60,000 People Affected Due to Torrential Rains, Thousands Relocated
Ampil, the 10th typhoon this year, has wreaked havoc in China after it made a landfall in Shanghai earlier this week. According to reports by Chinese news agency ecns.cn, over 2,60,000 people have been affected by incessant rains. Moreover, about 31,600 hectares of crops in east China’s Shandong Province have been affected by heavy rainfall triggered by Ampil.
Beijing, July 27: Typhoon Ampil has caused a havoc in China, forcing the relocation of thousands in northeastern parts. Ampil, the 10th typhoon this year, has wreaked havoc in China after it made a landfall in Shanghai earlier this week. According to reports by Chinese news agency ecns.cn, over 2,60,000 people have been affected by incessant rains. Moreover, about 31,600 hectares of crops in east China’s Shandong Province have been affected by heavy rainfall triggered by Ampil.
The tropical storm hit the province Monday noon. Since then, rescue and relief operations have been launched across the province. The report further informs that the direct economic losses in the province were estimated at 116 million yuan (17 million U.S. dollars), according to the provincial civil affairs department.
China has a four-tier colour-coded weather warning system, with red representing the most severe weather, followed by orange, yellow, and blue. Last week, China's national observatory on Friday issued a yellow alert for typhoon Ampil which strengthened before its forecast landfall in the eastern coastal region.
The meteorological observatory of northeast China’s Liaoning Province informed that Ampil was now moving northeast at a speed up to 30 kilometres per hour. The observatory informed that most areas of the province would experience precipitation on Tuesday and Wednesday. Reports inform that the municipal meteorological observatory issued a blue alert for typhoon and storms Monday noon, but upgraded the alert to orange at around Tuesday noon.
According to a notice on China’s Ministry of Finance website, China has allocated a special fund to help farmers deal with the impact of recent typhoon and flooding. The notice informs that the ministry has given 1 billion yuan (US$147.8 million) to local governments in the regions hit by the natural disasters, to help farmers repair irrigation facilities, and buy fertilizer and seeds, among other production materials, according to the notice.
