London, November 12: A weight-loss surgery in Turkey turned fatal for a 54-year-old woman from the UK, as an inquest revealed she bled to death following a procedure gone wrong. The woman, a mother of two, suffered critical artery damage during the surgery, leading to cardiac arrest and her subsequent death in Antalya’s hospital on August 6, 2023.

According to a BBC report, the deceased woman was identified as Janet Lynne Savage. The inquest in Caernarfon concluded that she died due to acute blood loss during a gastric sleeve operation. Savage had contacted Regenesis Health Travel in early July 2023 and quickly arranged the surgery after expressing concerns about her weight gain post-Ozempic use. China: Woman Dies After Undergoing 6 Cosmetic Surgeries in 24 Hours, Family Sues Clinic for 1.2 Million Yuan.

On the surgery day, complications arose immediately, and she ceased breathing within minutes, according to Alison Ergun from Regenesis. Translated notes from surgeon Dr Ramazan Azar said a 3-4mm defect in her aorta, causing severe bleeding. Despite surgical efforts to repair the aorta, Savage was declared dead after intensive care medics failed to find a pulse.

A post-mortem in Wales confirmed the cause of death as acute bleeding from the repaired abdominal aorta, pathologist Muhammad Aslam reported. Batteries, Razor Blade Fragments, Screws: 14-Year-Old Hathras Boy Dies After 65 Metal Objects Removed from Stomach in Complex Surgery in Delhi (Watch Video).

In January this year, a 20-year-old woman in the UK died after undergoing weight loss surgery in Turkey. Morgan Maria Ribeiro, from South London, travelled to Turkey to undergo gastric sleeve surgery along with her partner Jamie Brewster. Brewster said Ribeiro had conducted extensive research before booking the operation, which he said cost her 2500 pounds.

She went under the knife on January 5 and was given the all-clear to leave the clinic and fly home three days later. However, she fell seriously ill on her flight back to Gatwick Airport, forcing pilots to make an emergency landing in Serbia. She was rushed to the hospital, where doctors said she was suffering from septic shock due to an infection caused by an incision in her small intestine that had occurred during the procedure. She suffered a heart attack on January 9 and was placed in an induced coma.
