Tunisian Boat Wreck Kills 112 in Deadliest Migrant Disaster of 2018
The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) confirmed that 112 people died from the shipwreck.
In a tragic and heart wrenching incident, over 112 people are reported to have died after a boat ferrying migrants capsized off the coast of Tunisia on Saturday, June 2. Killing over 100, this is the worst and the deadliest case of migrants losing lives in a migration attempt in the year 2018.
51 bodies have been recovered and about 68 were rescued according to reports in the media. The interior ministry of Tunisia estimates that around 180 people were on the boat at the time of the accident. The administration has assumed that the missing people have died.
The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) confirmed that 112 people died from the shipwreck.
IOM Spokesman Flavio Di Giacomo added on Twitter that the final number could not be ascertained.
According to reports, the Tunisians and other Africans often try and migrate from Tunisia to Sicily in Italy in search of employment.
