Bangkok, August 2: Multiple explosions were heard in Bangkok in at least three locations on Friday. According to reports, the explosions were not massive. A report by Reuters informed that two people have suffered minor injuries in the blasts. As soon as the blasts were reported, Police teams and bomb squads rushed to the spot to take a stock of the situation. The Thai Police has initiated an investigation into the matter. No casualties have been reported so far. More details awaited.

Reports inform that the bomb squad reached at the three different scenes across Bangkok and found suspicious objects. These locations are Chaengwattana government complex, BTS Chong Nonsi by the Mahanakhon building and Rama IX. According to tweets, mulitple explosions took place at Chong Nonsri, Rama 9 57/1 and Chang Wattana in Bangkok. "At Chang Wattana there are 3 bombs altogether, the 1st bomb exploded at 6 am, the 2nd at 7:30 am, the 3rd at 9 am via Ch 36", a tweet said.

Locations of the Multiple Blasts in Banking:

  • First explosion was reported at around 8.10 am on Friday near a white care in a parking lot in front of the Mahanakorn Building near Chong Non Si BTS station in Bangkok.
  • Second explosion was reported in next 20 minutes, at around 8.30 am in a small flower nursery, located under a walkway connecting the BTS station with the Mahanakorn Building.
  • A third explosion was reported at the Chaengwattana Government Center in the Pratunam area of Bangkok.
  • A fourth explosion was reported on Rama IX Road near King’s Power Building.

The serial blasts have been reported a day after Police temporarily shut the inbound section of Rama I Road outside their headquarters. They closed the area after a security camera captured a man dropping a suspicious object at the fence.

It must be noted that the city is currently hosting a meeting of foreign ministers from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and their counterparts from across the world. In 2015, a bombing took place inside the Erawan Shrine in Bangkok killing 20 people and injuring 125.  The Thai police were reported to have arrested two suspects, the second of whom confessed to having been the bomber. He later retracted his confession.

In 2006, several blasts were reported on December 31 January 1, 2007, during New Year's Eve festivities in Bangkok. Four explosions went off almost simultaneously in different parts of the city, followed by several more explosions within the next 90 minutes. In total, eight explosions were reported during the night.
