Mumbai, July 16: A tourist in Brazil died after being bitten by a venomous spider hidden in a restaurant chair. The incident occurred on July 9 at a beachside restaurant in Cairu where the tourist was having a meal. After falling ill, he was hospitalised. But despite treatment, he succumbed to the spreading necrosis five days later, on July 14. The Brazilian spiders have also been named among the "deadliest" by Guinness World Records multiple times.

According to the Mirror, the victim, Vinicius, was on holiday in Cairo with his friends. During lunch, Vinicius sat on a sofa despite a friend's warning that the cane chairs often house deadly brown spiders. The chair had a spider's cocoon, but Vinicius sat on it anyway. HORRIFIC! The friend said, "It was on this little wicker sofa, man. I even told the guy to take it off. That's their cocoon. He sat on the little sofa, and I sat on a separate chair." Reportedly, he became very ill the next day, developing chest pain and breathing difficulties. The spider's powerful neurotoxin caused necrosis to spread over his entire calf. He was under treatment for five days but couldn't survive. He died on July 14 due to the spider bite. According to a 2018 study, around 4,000 spider bites are reported annually in Brazil, but only 0.5% of these cases are considered severe.
