South Korea: Gas Leak at Samsung Electronics Chip Plant Claims Life of Worker, Two Others Injured
In a tragic incident, One worker was killed, while two others were injured when carbon dioxide leaked at a Samsung Electronics chip plant on Tuesday in Suwon, 34 km from Seoul.
Seoul, September 4: In a tragic incident, One worker was killed, while two others were injured when carbon dioxide leaked at a Samsung Electronics chip plant on Tuesday in Suwon, 34 km from Seoul. According to a report published by AFP, the three were found unconscious in the basement of the semiconductor factory. A 24-year-old man was declared dead in hospital, while and two others of 26 and 54 years of age remained unconscious.
According to the reports, all were employees of one of Samsung’s suppliers and were inspecting the factory’s gas-related facilities. The 24-year-old man was believed to have died because of suffocation due to a carbon dioxide leak. There is a vast semiconductor production compound of Samsung in Suwon. Police and fire authorities were investigating the exact cause of the incident.
It is not the first fatal incident which occurred at major companies in South Korea. In March 2014, one worker of a Samsung subcontractor was killed for a carbon dioxide leak in a Samsung facility in Suwon city. In a similar incident in January, four workers suffocated due to a gas leak at a steel factory owned by Posco in the southern city of Pohang. In August last year also, an explosion of a fuel tank in a vessel under construction at the headquarters of STX Offshore and Shipbuilding in the southern city of Changwon claimed lives of four workers.
