Peshawar, May 30: A popular Sikh religious leader and human rights activist in Pakistan, Charnjit Singh, was killed inside his shop which is in Scheme Chowk area, on the outskirts of Peshawar on Tuesday, May 29. The 52-year-old Sikh activist was shot while he was in his shop and died on the spot said police investigating the case. Superintendent of police named Saddar Shaukat Khan confirmed that he was shot in the shop by an attacker who escaped immediately after the attack.
The police has said that they are yet to ascertain if it is a case of target killing. The investigating team is also trying to find if the killing is a case of personal animosity. The shot Sikh activist was living in Peshawar since a long time and owned a shop in the province for quite some time. His family belongs from the Kurram Agency.
This is not the first time that a member of the Sikh community has been killed or targeted in the area. This particular incident has sparked an outrage in the community in Pakistan. Most of the Sikhs live in Mohalla Jogan Shah which hosts the old temple area. In a similar incident in the year 2014, a Sikh trader was gunned down in Peshawar in Gulberg neighbourhood. The incident has fuelled both anger and fear in the minority Sikh community in Pakistan.
