For those unacquainted with the ritual, a purity ball is a religious ceremony where fathers and daughters gather in a formal fancy night of dinner, dancing together dressed in ball gown attire and ends the evening with daughters vowing to abstain from sex until marriage. Yes, it might sound unusual, but many daughters across 48 states and 17 countries, have taken this oath. When a majority of the teenage population across will probably never think of making such a vow to their fathers, in Louisiana, Hannah insisted that this has made the two of them closer. Her pledge to abstinence has also strengthened her strong belief in God. For Hannah, taking purity vow was influenced by her family and faith.

In an interview with Barcroft TV, Hannah said, “The bible says that sex before marriage is a sin and I believe that. I'm doing this Purity Ball because it's like a symbol to tell everybody. That this is what I am doing and you may not accept it. You may think it's weird but this is what I want to do because I want to take the stand for what believe in. I want to make a promise to myself and to God that I will stay pure until I get married. I don't need to do all these things that girls are doing and that girls consider to be normal. What is the Social Purity Movement?

The social purity movement was a late 19th-century movement. According to Christian morality, the movement sought to abolish prostitution and other sexual activities that were considered immoral. It found its roots in Colorado Springs about 20 years ago and was founded by evangelist Randy Wilson and his wife, Lisa. The movement is now present in 48 states and nearly 17 countries, where annual purity balls are held. This ceremony is for girls to pledge to their fathers to abstain from sex until the day they get married. The father and daughter are to sign a purity contract, and the daughter is given a purity ring that they are supposed to wear on their wedding ring finger.

The founder of the movement, Wilson, said the Purity Ball is not only about abstaining, but it was also made to make the bond of fathers and daughters stronger. The Purity Movement discourses that sex before marriage is a sin and use contracting to Sexual Transmission Diseases (STDs) and pregnancy outside the wedlock, as reasons to maintain self-denial. Hannah, in her interviews, admitted that she had boyfriends in the past, but now she is adamant the next person she dates will be the one she gets married to.
