New York, May 22: A Teenager has been sentenced to up to six decades in jail after he mistakenly set fire to a "wrong" in August 2020 in an act of revenge over his stolen iPhone, killing a family of five in Colorado, US. The accused, Kevin Bui, pleaded guilty this week to starting a late-night fire in a Denver neighbourhood, resulting in the deaths of a Senegalese family of five.
According to the New York Post report, the fire was ignited as revenge after Bui tracked his stolen iPhone to the vicinity using the "Find my iPhone" app. The victims, known as the Diol family, included a couple in their twenties, their daughter, and a relative with her daughter. Tragically, two infant daughters lost their lives in the blaze. Additionally, three others sustained broken bones while attempting to escape the fire by jumping from the second floor. CCTV footage from that fateful night captured Bui and his two friends wearing face masks and hoodies as they set fire to the home. The trio became suspects after authorities obtained a search warrant, compelling Google to provide IP addresses associated with searches for the home's address within 15 days of the fire. The arrests occurred nearly five months after the incident.
In a separate legal process, Dillon Siebert, who was 14 years old at the time, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder last year. He received a sentence of three years in juvenile detention and seven years in a state prison program for young inmates.
