Popularly known as 'Asia's Nobel Prize', the award is among the highest honours given to people excelling in set fields. The award committee tweeted a list of recipients for 2019, saying that Kumar has been honoured for his "courage undaunted" while "harnessing journalism to give voice to the voiceless". They also praised his "unfaltering commitment to professional, ethical journalism of the highest standards". Ravish Kumar is among the five recipients of the 2019 Magsaysay award, the "greatness of spirit and transformative leadership in Asia".
Many Indians have bagged the award in the past. Acharya Vinoba Bhave was the first Indian to win the award. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal is the only person from a political background to bag Ramon Magsaysay Award. Amitabh Chowdhury was the first Indian to win an award for journalism. The first Indian woman to win the award was Mother Teresa. Jayaprakash Narayan won the award for his public service in 1965. The Ramon Magsaysay Award is an annual award established to remember former Philippine President Ramon Magsaysay who is considered to be an example of integrity in governance, courageous service to the people, and pragmatic idealism within a democratic society. It internationally-recognized as Asia's Nobel Prize counterpart and is the highest award given to Asian individuals and organisations. The trustees of the Rockefeller Brothers Fund based in New York City, established the award in April 1957.
