Mumbai, September 23: In a horrific incident that has come to light, a 6-month-old baby was reportedly nearly eaten alive by rats that bit him over 50 times in the United States. The alleged incident is said to have taken place while the baby slept in his crib last week. The incident came to light when Evansville Police Department officers responded to a call after the child's father said his 6-month-old son suffered serious bite wounds.

According to a report in USA Today, the incident occurred on September 13 in Indiana. After the incident came to light, the police arrested the boy's parents, David and Angel Schonabaum, on multiple counts of neglect and other criminal charges. Besides, the child's aunt was also arrested on similar charges. As per the report, the couple lives with their three children and another family member and her two children in Indiana. Cops said that when they reached the home, they saw the 6-month-old baby boy covered in blood. A police officer said that the boy was allegedly suffering from more than 50 bite wounds to his head and face.

"All four of (the victim's) fingers and thumb on his right hand were missing the flesh from the top of them, exposing fingertip bones," Jonathan Helm, police detective, wrote in the arrest affidavit. After recovering, the baby boy was flown to a hospital in Indianapolis, where he was given a blood transfusion as his temperature dropped to 93.5 degrees. US Shocker! Doctors also said that the boy was suffering from moderate hypothermia and hypoxemia. Cops who recovered the boy said the couple's home was full of "clutter, trash and rat faeces". In his statement, the boy's father told investigators that they started having rodent issues in March and that the Terminix exterminators were already treating the house.

However, cops also said that the rodents had reportedly snacked on other children in the home as well in early September.
