Glaciers are melting, sea levels are rising, cloud forests are dying, and the wildlife is scrambling to keep pace. As we power our modern lives, it is causing a set of changes to the Earth’s climate or weather patterns which varies from place to place. In order to curb the global warming, government and environmental organisations are striving to create awareness in each corner of the society. On that note, Pope Francis repeated his calls on the countries’ representors to take action and reduce global warming, warning that climate change is threatening to turn Earth into a pile of “rubble, deserts and refuse.”

On June 29, at a Vatican Conference marking the end of the third anniversary of his landmark environmental encyclical, Praise Be, Francis made this appeal. The Associated Press reported and quoted Francis saying, “There is a real danger that we will leave future generations only rubble, deserts and refuse.” In the same report, it was noted that Praise Be document aimed to prompt action at the Paris Climate Conference 2015, called for a paradigm shift in human’s relationship with Mother Nature. While explaining, Pope urged the government to honour their Paris commitments and said institutions such as International Monetary Fund and World Bank have significant roles to play in encouraging reforms promoting sustainable development.

Paris Climate Accord is an agreement which reached by 195 countries that sought to control global greenhouse gas emissions through individual, non-binding national plans. According to this agreement, each country determines, plans and regularly reports its contribution it should make in order to mitigate global warming.

“It grieves us to see the lands of indigenous peoples expropriated and their cultures trampled on by predatory schemes and by new forms of colonialism, fueled by the culture of waste and consumerism,” Francis said on Friday. Pope Francis has always been vocal about his attempts to encourage countries to take climate change seriously. The Vatican Conference on June 29 was the latest one in a series of initiatives meant to increase a sense of urgency about the threat global warming poses majorly to the world’s poorest and marginalised people.
