New Delhi, Mar 19: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday dialled Russian President Vladimir Putin to congratulate him on his fourth consecutive win in the presidential elections. With this victory, Putin is set to rule Russia at least till 2024.
"Conveying his compliments, the Prime Minister expressed hope that under Putin's leadership, 'Special & Privileged Strategic Partnership' between India and Russia will continue to grow. PM Modi also stated that he looks forward to welcoming President Putin in India for Annual Summit later this year," said the statement issued by the Ministry of External Affairs.
A day earlier, the Congress adopted a resolution at its 84th plenary session charging the Modi government of degrading ties with "long-time ally" Russia, apart from worsening the relationship with China. The party also promised to "recalibrate" the bilateral ties with the US if it wins the general elections next year.
Apart from India, a host of countries congratulated Putin on his record fourth term victory. The Russian President polled 76 per cent of the votes, while being challenged by seven candidates for the coveted post.
However, the country's centrifugal opposition leader and known anti-graft activist Alexei Navalny was barred from running against Putin, due to his conviction in a fraud case.
