Geneva, September 20: In another embarrassment for Pakistan, the country failed to garner support for its resolution on the Kashmir issue at the ongoing United Nations Human Rights Commission. Pakistan couldn't file a request for a resolution on the Kashmir issue as it failed to bring minimum 16 nations on board to get its petition accepted, India Today reported. Notably, adoption of the resolution would have required a minimum of 24 votes. 'Accidental War' Between India And Pakistan Possible if Situation Persists in Jammu And Kashmir: Shah Mehmood Qureshi.

The last day to file a request for a resolution during the 42nd UNHRC session was on September 19. The session, which started on September 9, concludes on September 27. Before heading to Geneva to attend the UNHRC session, Pakistan's Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi had promised the country that Islamabad would push for a resolution on the Kashmir issue. However, Qureshi failed to keep his words. Poisoned Pens Don't Work for Too Long: Syed Akbaruddin Takes Dig at Pakistan.

Tension between India and Pakistan escalated after New Delhi scrapped Jammu and Kashmir's special status under Article 370 of the Indian Constitution on August 5. Reacting to India's move on Kashmir, Pakistan downgraded diplomatic ties with New Delhi and expelled the Indian High Commissioner. Pakistan has alleged large-scale human rights violations and violence in Jammu and Kashmir.

The Indian government and the Kashmir administration, however, have stoutly denied Pakistan's allegations. Pakistan, with help from its all-weather ally China, had managed to take the Kashmir issue to the UN Security Council last month. But a closed-door meeting of the UNSC, in a setback for both Beijing and Islamabad, ended without any outcome or statement.

Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan is likely to raise the Kashmir issue in his address to in the upcoming UNGA session. Ahead of Khan's speech, India's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Syed Akbaruddin, said that "there may be some who stoop low".
