Lahore, August 19: A flood alert has been sounded in Pakistan after India reportedly released upto 2,00,000 cusecs of water into the Satluj river. The release of excess water, from the Ropar Headworks Dam on Sunday, has also led to deluge-like situation in parts of India's Punjab with nearly 250 villages being affected.
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) in Islamabad issued a red alert today, asking the government to enact measures to avert devastation in case of the Satluj flowing way above the danger mark. Based on the NDMA's warning, the administration in Kasur and other districts of Pakistan's Punjab evacuated people from low-lying areas and shifted them to safer places.
"Discharges from Bhakra Dam and merging the flows from lower catchments is likely to synchronise to form medium to high flood level in River Sutlej at GS Wala," the NDMA warning said.
The flood alert comes amid a separate alarm raised by the country's weather office, warning of medium-to-high intensity rainfall in upper and lower catchment areas of rivers Satluj, Beas and Ravi over the next 72 hours.
Meanwhile, a separate flood alert has been issued by the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) based in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (K-P). The warning came shortly after India reportedly released excess water from the Alchi Dam into river Indus on August 18.
