Islamabad, May 4: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairperson Imran Khan was acquitted on Friday in a case over the wounding of a police chief during clashes in 2014 between Khan’s supporters and police at a rally in Islamabad.
At the last hearing on April 25, Judge Shahrukh Arjumand had summoned the PTI chief. Imran Khan was present in anti-terrorism court (ATC) today. Khan welcomed the decision. Talking to the media after the decision, Imran said that he was happy over the court decision and promised to stop the misuse of anti-terrorism laws when his government comes to power, reported Geo TV News.
The PTI chief also slammed former prime minister of Pakistan Nawaz Sharif and Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The cricketer turned politician criticised Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz leaders for their anti-women remarks and also called out Nawaz's daughter Maryam for being a false champion of women's rights.
However, former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif criticised the decision by the ATC. The PTI chief and other party leaders were accused of attacking the Parliament and Pakistan Television office during the 2014 sit-in in Islamabad. The party leaders were also accused of thrashing the then SSP Asmatullah Junejo and violating the loudspeakers act.
The PTI and Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) leaders were booked after they marched towards the Parliament and PM House during the 2014 rally, in an attempt to topple the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz government. Both the parties alleged Nawaz Sharif and his party of rigging 2013 General elections.
