Ukraine, July 12: Ukraine is all set to introduce chemical castration for men in the age group of 18 and 65 if found guilty of raping or sexually abusing minors. This new law is in order to curb the rise in child rape cases and those involved in sexual assaults with minors. According to a news report on the Ukrinform, chemical castration will involve a forced injection of anti-androgen drugs consisting of chemicals which will reduce the libido and sexual activity. The law will be applicable to all child rapes including “unnatural” rape and sexual abuse of children above and below the age of puberty. The reason behind this new legislation is keeping in minds the rise in cases of child rapes. Reportedly, in 2017 the official figures showed 320 child rapes in Ukraine and as of today, the number of paedophile sex abuse cases are believed to run into thousands.
Under the new law, Ukraine will also set up a public register of paedophiles jailed for child rape and sexual abuse of minors. These criminals will be monitored for life by police even after they are released from jail. The maximum jail term for raping a minor was also increased from 12 to 15 years. These laws were passed at a special session of the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine’s parliament.
