Washington, March 20: President Donald Trump on Monday sent greetings to Iranians, wishing them a happy Nowruz- the Persian New Year, while criticising and slamming Iran's government and Tehran's powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
Trump in his message said that, “I wish a beautiful and blessed Nowruz to the millions of people around the world who are celebrating the arrival of spring”. “The history of Nowruz is rooted in Iran, where for millennia a proud nation has overcome great challenges by the strength of its culture and the resilience of its people,” added the US President in his address. But he also lambasted the Iranian government and said that the people of Iran face the challenge of “rulers who serve themselves instead of serving the people.”
Donald Trump has always been a vocal critic of Iran's nuclear program and had threatened to pull Washington out of a multilateral deal with Tehran to restrict its nuclear program. The President called the Revolutionary Guard “a hostile army that brutalizes and steals from the Iranian people to fund terrorism abroad.”
According to Reuters, Trump in his statement claimed that the Guard had spent more than $16 billion to support Syria’s government from falling. He did not stop there and reiterated his stand that Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps support militants and terrorists in Syria, Iraq and Yemen.
Nowruz is Iran's biggest festival and involves family gatherings and exchanging gifts. In the literal sense, Nowruz means a ‘new day’.
