New York, October 9: As Nikki Haley resigned from her coveted post of US ambassador to the United Nations, speculations were rife on her potential entry into the 2020 presidential race. Putting the rumours to rest, the Republican stalwart said she would not be entering into the electoral fray.
Haley, instead, reiterated her support to the Donald Trump-led administration, claiming that she would be campaigning for his second term. Nikki Haley Resigns as US Ambassador to the United Nations, Donald Trump Accepts Resignation.
Trump, meanwhile, lauded Haley for her stint at the UN, calling her an able administrator who served the United States with vigour. "Nikki Haley did an incredible job, she is leaving at the end of the year to take a break," he said.
Haley, born as Nimrata Randhawa to Indian immigrants, became the first-minority Governor of South California in 2010. Her performance was lauded from all quarters, which led to her re-election with an overwhelming mandate in 2014.
In 2017, after Trump took charge as the US President, she was elevated as the US ambassador to the UN, replacing Samantha Power who had concluded her tenure.
Haley's stint at the UN was marred with controversy, with the ambassadors of Russia, Iran, Syria and Yemen calling her a "warmonger" on numerous occasions. She was also isolated on more than one occasion while defending Israel over the alleged excesses committed in Palestine.
