Sydney, November 9: A young sailor was rescued nearly 24 hours after falling overboard from the Singapore-based cargo vessel Double Delight off Australia’s Newcastle coast. The incident occurred around 11:30 pm on Thursday, about eight kilometers from Newcastle, north of Sydney. The sailor, in his 20s, reportedly fell overboard while on deck late at night, sparking a widespread search coordinated by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA).

The Double Delight, a 235-meter-long bulk carrier, had been en route from Japan’s west coast and moored in Newcastle on Saturday. The Newcastle Harbourmaster was notified of the sailor’s disappearance at 11 am on Friday. AMSA deployed two helicopters and two boats to search the waters. UK Shocker: Malaysian Teen Attacks Schoolmates With Claw Hammers He Collected for ‘Zombie Apocalypse’ While They Slept in Devon, Sentenced to Life.

Remarkably, around 6:20 pm on Friday, a recreational fisherman spotted the sailor waving his arms near Blacksmiths Beach, close to Swansea. Initially, reports suggested he had swum the eight kilometres to shore, but authorities later clarified that he was found floating off Blacksmiths Beach, still wearing a lifejacket. UAE Shocker: UK Man Arrested in Dubai for Posting Negative Google Review on Dog Grooming Salon After Wrongful Termination, Faces 2 Years in Prison for Slander.

NSW Ambulance paramedics arrived at Boatrowers Reserve to treat the sailor. Though conscious and communicative, he showed signs of hypothermia and exhaustion after spending nearly a full day in the water. “He was very cold, absolutely exhausted,” a NSW Ambulance spokeswoman said, noting that his age likely helped his endurance.

The sailor was transported to John Hunter Hospital, where he remains in serious but stable condition. The Australian Border Force (ABF) is handling the case, but the ABF declined to comment further.
