Kathmandu, July 17: The death toll due to devastating floods and landslides in Nepal due to torrential rain jumped to 90 on Thursday, authorities confirmed. According to details by Nepal Police, 90 have died in rain-related incidences while 29 people are still missing. The search operation to trace the missing ones is underway. Authorities further informed that over 3,366 people have been rescued from across the nation. The data collection and relief distribution is in full swing across the nation.

Torrential rains lashed the country with the number of affected people standing at around 2.6 million, officials said. Parts of Kathmandu have been left submerged under floodwaters. Over 260 climate scientists gathered in Kathmandu to discuss the impact of climate change on the Himalayan nation and assess vulnerability and adaptation measures. Parts of Kathmandu Submerged Under Floodwaters After Heavy Rainfall.

The Himalayan nation has been witnessed heavy rainfall since July 11 which is an indication of the changing rainfall pattern, data from Simara station of the Meteorological Forecasting Division revealed. According to reports, Nepal is receiving more rainfall in a short duration of time, an abnormal phenomenon that is slowly becoming a new normal, the data added.

Apart from Nepal, several Indian states including Assam, Manipur, Tripura and Bihar have been reeling under flood-like situations. Reports inform that over 6.7 million people in India have been directly affected by the floods, with about 2.5 million in Bihar and 4.2 million in Assam.
