Buenos Aires, December 2: FIFA President Gianni Infantino on Saturday gifted Prime Minister Narendra Modi a custom-made G20 football jersey on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Infantino had missed the opportunity to meet Modi after the opening ceremony of the FIFA U-17 World Cup held in India in 2017 and made sure he met him this time. The Prime Minister thanked Infantino for his wonderful gesture.
He took to Twitter and thanked him by posting a picture on Twitter and wrote a special message for him. “Impossible to come to Argentina and not think about football. Argentinian players are tremendously popular in India. Today, received this jersey from @FIFAcom President Gianni Infantino. I thank him for the kind gesture”, the Prime Minister tweeted. The Prime Minister had spoken about football and how it had an impact in India while addressing the 'Yoga for Peace' event on November 27. The Prime Minister had said, if Argentina is interested in India's philosophy, art, music and dance, there are millions of fans of the Argentine football stars in India. “Maradona's name is used as a proverb in India," he had said in his address at the Yoga for Peace event. It was for the first time, that a FIFA President addressed the leaders of the world’s major economies in the G20 forum. “Infantino’s speech in Buenos Aires focused on the game as a force for good that unites the world”, a tweet by FIFA media stated.
After a three-day long hectic schedule, the Prime Minister on Saturday departed for New Delhi. During his visit to the 13th G20 Summit, he held a number of high-profile and historic meetings with a host of eminent world leaders. In his address on Saturday, Modi said that India will host the G20 summit in 2022, a year when the country will also complete 75 years of independence. PM Modi said that he had requested Italy if it can host the summit in 2021 and allow India to host the G20 countries for their annual summit in 2022.
