Michael Avenatti, a lawyer who has become a household name in the U.S. for his representation of adult film star Stormy Daniels, has been arrested on suspicion of domestic violence.

Los Angeles Police Department officer Jeff Lee confirmed the arrest and said the domestic violence report was received by them on Tuesday in West Los Angeles and the lawyer was placed under arrest on Wednesday. They posted this confirmation on Twitter as well.

Avenatti who received bail soon after, has refuted the charges and called them “bogus.” While walking out of the police station in Los Angeles, he said, "I have never struck a woman. I never will strike a woman." "I am confident I will be fully exonerated," he added.

The news of Avenatti’s arrest was first broken by celebrity news website TMZ. The report said a charge was made against him following a physical confrontation between the lawyer and a woman. The woman in question is not Avenatti’s wife.

The lawyer who has become a vocal critic of US President Donald Trump and has also mentioned considering running for the presidential elections in 2020, tweeted out against ‘false reporting.’

As there were conflicting reports around the charges, Stormy Daniels said on Thursday that she would get a new lawyer if the domestic violence allegations against Michael Avenatti, are true.

"I will say that right now they are just allegations and I am going to reserve judgment, and I hope that everyone does -- trust me, I know what it feels like to be on the other end of that -- until all the details are discovered," Daniels said.

"But if the allegations turn out to be true then I will definitely be seeking new representation because I cannot condone or support someone who is abusive," she added.

Avenatti has received statements of support from his current wife and former wife, both who have said they stand behind him.
