Washington DC, September 7: A 22-year-old mother in Memphis, Tennessee, United States, was recently arrested and charged with child abuse and child neglect after her 6-year-old son allegedly carried a loaded gun to school. The alleged incident occurred on Thursday, September 5, after a resource officer informed police about a student bringing a handgun to school.
In an official statement, the Memphis Police Department said that another student alerted the school staff about the firearm. The recovered gun was found to be a loaded 9mm Ruger handgun, reports People. Soon after the staff was alerted, a teacher recovered the weapon from the minor student's bag. After the incident, the 6-year-old boy's mother, Ke’Erinie King, reportedly admitted the gun was hers. King also told cops that she had received the gun from an "unknown person". Post this, police cross-checked the serial number of the gun and learned that the weapon was allegedly stolen. After her arrest, King was booked into the Shelby County Jail before being released without bond. The next court date in connection with the case is scheduled for October 4.
Meanwhile, 22-year-old King's mother, Lakeisha Williams, said that the incident was made to look as if her daughter gave the gun to her child to take to school. On the other hand, the Memphis-Shelby County Schools, in a statement, said the "school resource officer and leaders acted swiftly to address the situation." They have also urged parents and guardians to check their children's backpacks before the students come to school every day.
