The Mashco Piro are one of the largest uncontacted tribes remaining on Earth. Survival International released the video of the Mashco Piro tribe members on Tuesday, July 16. After the footage surfaced, concerns are raised that the Mashco Piro tribe is in trouble.

According to an article by Survival International, activists are saying it's a clear sign that logging needs to stop in the areas where the Mashco Piro tribe reside. Despite a request, the company did not comment. Certified by the Forest Stewardship Council, Canales Tahuamanu oversees 53,000 hectares (130,000 acres) of forest in Madre de Dios for cedar and mahogany extraction.

Mashco Piro Under Threat

Illegal logging activities in the Amazon pose a serious threat to the tribe's habitat and way of life. The territory traditionally inhabited by the Mashco Piro tribe overlaps with several active logging concessions. Notably, one concession is situated in close proximity to the recent sighting of the tribe.

"This is irrefutable evidence that many Mashco Piro live in this area, which the government has not only failed to protect but actually sold off to logging companies. The logging workers could bring in new diseases that would wipe out the Mashco Piro, and there’s also a risk of violence on either side, so it’s very important that the territorial rights of the Mashco Piro are recognised and protected by law," the president of the local Indigenous organisation, FENAMAD, said.
