Majorca Flash Floods: Britons Among Nine Dead as Disaster Hits Spanish Holiday Island
Sant Llorenc des Cardassar, one of the municipalities of the island much frequented by tourists, is the worst affected in the natural disaster.
Madrid, October 10: The Spanish authorities have confirmed the death of two Britons, among the nine whose bodies have been retrieved in the flood-hit Majorca holiday island. Six other tourists, including foreign nationals, are missing, the authorities informed on Wednesday.
The flash-floods were unleashed in Majorca after the island was struck with unprecedented rainfall. Scores of houses in the region have been inundated, with hundreds being shifted to the relief camps installed by the government in areas above sea-level. Sant Llorenc des Cardassar, one of the municipalities of the island much frequented by tourists, is the worst affected in the natural disaster.
Antonia Bauza, deputy mayor of Sant Llorenc des Cardassar, said dozens of vacation homes in the council have been washed away. "The number of those missing could be way more than what has been confirmed," he told the local media.
Spain's meteorological office has issued a red alert in the neighbouring holiday islands of Ibiza and Formentera, where massive rainfall has been reported over the past two days. The downpour are a result of the massive depression in the Mediterranean Sea.
The regional government of Spain's Balearic Islands -- which houses the holiday archipelagos, has deployed 400 emergency workers to minimise casualties and rescue the stranded tourists.
