The bust, designed by renowned Indian sculptor Padma Shree awardee Ram Sutar, who also designed the ‘Statue of Unity’ in Gujarat, will be unveiled on December 14 during External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar’s visit to the UN for India’s month-long presidency of the Council. About the Bust

The other Indian gift on display at the United Nations Headquarters is an 11th-century black-stone statue of ‘Surya,’ the Sun God, which was donated on July 26, 1982. The statue is dated from the late Pala period and is currently on display in the Conference Building, was given to the UN as a gift by then-Prime Minister late Indira Gandhi. The sculpture was accepted on behalf of the United Nations by then-Secretary-General Javier Perez de Cuellar.
Underlining the significance of the event, Kamboj said that Mahatma Gandhi’s legacy of non-violence and peace is enduring and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s statement that “this is not an era of war” speaks to that very legacy and has been widely accepted by the world.
