A day after Kilauea volcano erupted in Hawaii, the volcano has seen fresh eruptions sending fountains of lava over 100ft out of the ground. The eruptions have taken place on Hawaii's Big Island and has destroyed several homes.

The Hawaii County Civil Defense Agency said there were fissures on three streets and told any remaining residents to evacuate. It said there were deadly levels of dangerous sulphur dioxide gas in the air and emergency crews would not be able to help anyone affected.

The new volcanic activity in Mount Kilauea's lower east rift zone amounted to "vigorous lava spattering", the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said, adding that additional outbreaks in the area were likely. The Geological Survey said at least five fissure vents have opened in the subdivision so far — and that more outbreaks are likely to occur along the rift zone.

A magnitude 6.9 earthquake shook Hawaii's Big Island today, prompting fresh eruptions of a volcano that is threatening residential neighbourhoods, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

It said the shallow temblor struck at 12:32 pm (2232 GMT) and was centered on the south flank of the Kilauea volcano, which first erupted yesterday after a series of quakes on the island. It had a depth of five kilometers.

"This is in almost exactly the same location as the deadly 1975 M 7.1 quake," USGC said in a tweet.

Kilauea first erupted Thursday, sending white, billowing clouds of steam and volcanic ash into the sky and prompting emergency officials to order mandatory evacuations.

Life on the island has been brought to a halt as mandatory evacuation orders are in place for affected areas. Brian Schatz, Democratic Senator from Hawaii tweeted out that the National Guard has been mobilized and shelters opened for people displaced by the volcanic eruptions.

Kilauea is the youngest and most active volcano on Hawaii Island, according to USGS.
