Washington, January 21: Senator Kamala Harris, former Attorney General of California, on Monday confirmed that she will be contesting 2020 presidential election. Harris, a daughter of immigrants parents, made this announced during an interview on news channel ABC's "Good Morning America." She has also posted a campaign on Youtube. Kamala Harris, First Indian-Origin US Senator, Says ‘Will Decide on 2020 Presidential Bid Soon’.

"The future of our country depends on you and millions of others lifting our voices to fight for our American values," she said in the video. "That's why I'm running for president of the United States," she added. Kamala Harris Chooses Baltimore as Headquarters for Potential Presidential 2020 Campaign: Report.

Harris, earlier, tweeted, "I often look to the words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. for inspiration. These words ring especially true today: “The time is always right to do what is right.” Let’s recommit to fighting for the very best of who we are & remember to be joyful warriors along the way."

The major announcement from Harris came a day after the United States celebrated the legacy of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. It is also noted that Shirley Anita Chisholm, first black woman elected to the US Congress and first black woman to run for presidentship, had launched her campaign 47 years ago this week.

Notably, if elected, Harris would be the first African-American woman and first woman of Asian heritage as president. Meanwhile, Harris is not much known nationally, revealed CNN survey in September. The survey found that nearly 51 per cent of voters in the US had never heard of her. In a bid to introduce herself, she launched a requisite campaign book "The Truths We Hold," on January 8.
