Tokyo, August 4: An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.2 on Richter sclae hit coastal areas of Fukushima in Japan. Tremors were also felt in Tokyo. The quake struck at around 4 pm IST off the east coast of the country at a depth of approximately 50 km. There are no reports of any casualties or injuries. No Tsunami warning has been issued yet. Japan sits on the so-called Ring of Fire, one of the world's most seismically active areas. The country accounts for 20 percent of earthquakes of magnitude 6 or more.
In June this year also, Japan's capital Tokyo and its surrounding regions were hit by a 5.5-magnitude earthquake. The quake had its epicentre on the coast of Chiba - a prefecture located west of Tokyo - at a depth of about 60 km. Japan suffers earthquakes with relative frequency and its infrastructure is specially designed to withstand strong tremors.
