Islamabad, October 9: Lieutenant General Asim Munir has been appointed as the new Director General of Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) on Wednesday. Munir was promoted to the rank of Lt. Gen in September. The Army Promotion Board headed by Chief of Army Staff Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa approved the promotions of six generals in place of five generals who retired on October 1. Reports were rife that Lt. Gen. Munir would be appointed DG ISI after Lt Gen Naveed Mukhtar’s retirement on October 25, who assumed office in December, 2016. Lt Gen Munir previously also served as DG Military Intelligence. As per the statement of Pakistan’s Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), Lt Gen Muhammad Adnan was appointed as the new vice chief of the general staff. According to a report published in Pakistan’s The Express Tribune, Lt Gen Nadeem Zaki was also assigned as commander of Mangla Corps which is a primary strike formation of the Pakistan Army. Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan Praises ISI, Calls it Country’s First Line of Defence

In addition to these assignments, three other officers were assigned to staff positions at the General Headquarters (GHQ). Lt Gen Azhar Saleh Abbasi was appointed as chief of logistics staff, Lt Gen Abdul Aziz as the new military secretary and Lt Gen Waseem Ashraf as IG Arms, reported The Express Tribune. Meanwhile, Lt Gen Shaheen Mazher was appointed as commander of the strategic Peshawar Corps.
