After American President Donald Trump announced to regulate the fraudulent immigration in the country, Indian native Baljinder Singh has become the first victim. The US has revoked his citizenship and reverted him to a Green card status. According to the authorities, he acquired the citizenship by fraud. He is now subject to removal proceedings from the Department of Homeland Security's discretion.
Baljinder Singh, 43, Carteret, New Jersey became a citizen in 2006 after marrying his American wife. But he arrived at San Francisco in 1991 without any travel documents or proof of identity, giving his name as Davinder Singh, informs the Justice Department. He missed his exclusion proceedings and received an order to be deported on January 7, 1992. But a month later he filed for an asylum application with the name Baljinder Singh. He abandoned this name after his marriage. It was his wife who filed a visa petition on his behalf. Singh was naturalized under the identity of Baljinder Singh on July 28, 2006.
The Department of Justice moved a petition last September before a court which mentioned of him hiding the deportation details in his citizenship application. On January 5, the US District Court issued an order to revoke his citizenship and canceling his Certification of Naturalisation. So, Baljinder now becomes a subject to removal from the country.
This happens to be the first crackdown after Operation Janus. It is a joint effort between Department of Justice and Department of Homeland Security examining people against fraudulent immigration. The initiative identified 315,000 cases with missing fingerprint data, raising concerns about background checks in naturalization process. The crackdown has been more severe against the background of Trump taking office since January 2017.
The department had also made a similar move against two people from Pakistan Parvez Manzoor Khan and Rashid Mahmood but there has been no decision in their case yet.
