The deadly hurricane hit the Bahamas on September 1 as a Category 5 hurricane causing widespread devastation to the archipelago. Winds of up to 298km/h were reported, which is the highest ever recorded at landfall. The hurricane battered the Abaco Islands and Grand Bahama, in the north of the archipelago, for almost two days. After causing widespread devastation in the Bahamas, the hurricane made a landfall in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia as a post-tropical cyclone.
