Honduran Migrants Resume March as Donald Trump Vows to Halt Caravan's Progress Towards US
Mexican authorities have further said they're asking for help from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees to process migrants seeking refugee status.
Mexico, October 22: Thousands of Honduran migrants resumed their long march on Sunday after crossing a river into Mexico. According to a report on CNN, the caravan was headed for Tapachula, a city about 37 kilometres north of the Mexico-Guatemala border. There were 10 buses and the drivers had been instructed to carry the migrants to shelters in Tapachula. Donald Trump Threatens to Use Military to Close US-Mexico Border.
Mexican authorities said that from Friday to Sunday, 1,028 people requested asylum in Mexico. The government in an earlier statement had said that priority attention was given to elders, children and women- some of whom were pregnant. Several Central American migrants were initially prevented from crossing the bridge. On Friday, the Mexican authorities allowed the passing of migrants for refugee camps.
Trump insisted that "full efforts" were under way to halt the caravan's progress toward the United States. He tweeted saying, "Full efforts are being made to stop the onslaught of illegal aliens from crossing our Southern Border. People have to apply for asylum in Mexico first, and if they fail to do that, the US will turn them away."
Reportedly, Mexican authorities have further said they're asking for help from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees to process migrants seeking refugee status.
