New Delhi, November 10: Search giant Google has paid tribute to Elisa Leonida Zamfirescu, the first ever female member of the General Association of Romanian Engineers (A.G.I.R). Google dedicated a doodle to Elisa Leonida on her 131st Birth Anniversary.

Google Doodle said in its description that "Elisa Leonida Zamfirescu oversaw numerous Economic Studies analyzing Romania’s supply of natural resources like coal, shale, natural gas, chromium, bauxite and copper." Doodle also mentioned Elisa Leonida's contribution in training staff and her meticulous work and dedication in training young chemists.

Elisa Leonida Zamfirescu was born on November 10, 1887, in the Romanian port city of Galați. She graduated from the Central School of Girls in Bucharest and earned her baccalaureate from the Mihai Viteazul High School.

Elisa Leonida Zamfirescu was rejected because of her gender when she applied to the Royal Technical Academy in Berlin. Doodle mentions that one of the deans at the school said that she would be better off focusing on "Church, children, and cooking."

However, Elisa Leonida Zamfirescu fought against all odds and became the first ever female member of the prestigious General Association of Romanian Engineers. She also taught physics and chemistry at the Pitar Moş School of Girls and then taught at the School of Electricians and Mechanics in Bucharest. She has a street named in her honour in Romania's capital.
