Ottawa, October 22: An earthquake of magnitude 6.6 hit the Vancouver Island in Canada on Monday, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) informed. Reports inform that the quake struck off the Canadian province of British Columbia. No immediate reports of casualties or damage from the quake were reported.
The quake hit at a depth of 21 miles about 117 miles southwest of Port Hardy, a town on the northeast end of Vancouver Island. No immediate tsunami warning was issued following the quake. According to a report by globalnews.ca, in its first, warning sensors were developed by Ocean Networks Canada and were installed along the Cascadia subduction zone. The report further informs that the earthquake early-warning system tested off British Columbia’s coast could give residents anywhere from 20 seconds to two minutes to prepare before a quake.
Reports inform that the sensors will be fully operating next March will be able to estimate the location and magnitude of a megathrust earthquake.
