Earthquake in Indonesia: Quake of Magnitude 7.2 Strikes North Maluku Province, Tsunami Warning Issued

An earthquake of 7.2 magnitude on the Richter scale hit off the coast of North Maluku province in eastern Indonesia on Thursday. A tsunami threat warning has been issued. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the epicentre of the quake, which occurred, was registered at a depth of 45.1 km.

Jakarta, November 14: An earthquake of 7.2 magnitude on the Richter scale hit off the coast of North Maluku province in eastern Indonesia on Thursday. A tsunami threat warning has been issued. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the epicentre of the quake, which occurred, was registered at a depth of 45.1 km. The quake hit 140 km northwest of the coastal town of Ternate. Indonesia is situated on the 'Ring of Fire', an area in the basin of the Pacific Ocean which is vulnerable to frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

Earlier in September this year, Indonesia was struck by two earthquakes within an hour. The first earthquake, measuring 6.1 on the Richter Scale hit off Java Island, while the second earthquake of the same intensity struck Indonesia's Bali island. In March this year, four people were killed after an earthquake of magnitude 6.8 struck Java island.
